Montañita is the surf capital of Ecuador.
It is located at 195 kilometers WNW from the big city of Guayaquil,
or two and a half hours drive on an excellent freeway,
on the North side of the provence of Santa Elena.
Facing straight West on the South American coast of the Pacific ocean,
it is located just a little bit south of the Equatorial line (or latitude zero)
that divides the two hemispheres of our planet.
The place can be divided in three areas:

グアヤキルから車で195kmですか・・・
Or “El Pueblo”, in Spanish.
It was originally a typicall farming/fishing town from the South American Pacific coastline.
In the last 20 years there has been a huge tourism explosion
because of its privileged surf and an esoteric “nice vibe”
that everyone experiences but very few can describe.
These days, the Town is approximately 10 blocks long along the coast (North to South)
and 4 blocks wide (East to West) from the ocean to the highway.
When you walk in town, you can see thousands of young, alternative tourists
from all over the world mixing with the surfers,
as they hang around dozens of little rustic bars, discotheques, restaurants,
tattoo shops and tourism operators.
With the presence of many street artists and artisans,
the ambience is very happy, musical, relaxed but busy, very unique and colorful.

賑やかな町らしい~(笑)
Located between “El Pueblo” and the point (or “La Punta”, in Spanish)
it is a coast line of approximately 0.75 kilometers,
full of uncrowded beachbreak surf, beach houses and relaxed beach goers.

This is where the Montañita legend started with
a bunch of pioneer hippy surfers in the early ‘70s.
With a super relaxed country vibe, a world-class right hand point break
and a dozen or so rustic hotels at just a few steps from the surf break,
it also has the very popular, natural, vertical formation on top of the hill,
that gives the name to the place (“Montañita” meaning little mountain).
Some eccentric and very creative people have referred to this formation as
“a natural antenna that receives cool energy from the cosmos”.

モンタニータは小さな山って意味なのね。
Facing straight West, Montañita is a rocky bottom right-hand point break
that gets any Pacific ocean swell from North to South
(extreme Norths or Souths are not best, though).
The surfable waves can vary from 2 to 12 feet high,
but a normal swell is in between 6 to 8 feet high
and as long as 100 yards of clean, perfect surf.
During April, the swells are beginning to change
from north to strong southwest swells with perfect, glassy conditions remaining.
Water temperature at this time of the year is around 28° C. or 82° F.
so no need for any kinds of wetsuits, however rash guards
/ lycras for sun protection are highly recommended.
If you plan to visit the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador,
a Spring Suit or a 3-2mm fullsuit might be recommended.
Montañita has several very good surf shops to get all surf accessories you might need,
as well as very good shapers and ding repair shops.
